Porto Cristo, history and culture

Porto Cristo is a natural port and a charming fishing village in eastern Mallorca. It forms part of the municipality of Manacor, in the Llevant region. Its population is around 7500 inhabitants.

Its name dates back to the period of Christian reoccupation of the island, in the year 1260, and means Port of Christ. There are two legends to which the origin of the name is attributed. The first legend has it that, one morning, a boat was found washed up on the shore, and it contained a crucifix. According to the other legend, one day, an ox appeared wandering through the village, carrying one of the symbols of Christ, and it refused to move. The locals took it as a sign, and christened the village Porto Cristo.

Despite the touristic nature of the island as a whole, Porto Cristo remains a very traditional Spanish fishing town, a characteristic which provides it with a special atmosphere.

What to see

If there is one thing that Porto Cristo is famous for worldwide, it might be Les Coves del Drach, a set of several underground caves whose horizontal length extends to nearly 1200 meters, with a maximum depth of 25 meters below the surface. The caves conceal a large underground lake, Lago Martel, considered one of the biggest underground lakes in the world.

And if you are left wanting even more, you can visit Les Coves dels Hams, somewhat more modest in terms of size and spectacle, but unique and impressive nonetheless.

As you stroll through the town, make sure you don’t miss a chance to admire the beautiful mermaid statue located on Calle San Jorge, and if you are in the mood for a longer walk, you can go all the way to the old Torre des Falcons, a watchtower from 1577 that formed part of the network of coastal defense towers to warn of the presence of pirates along the coast, and which is erected over a hidden cave with gorgeous views.

Things to do

From all of the different activities that can be done in Porto Cristo, we would highlight aquatic sports like scuba diving, kayaking and sailing. The natural grottos and rock formations in this area make it very popular with spelunkers and divers who want to explore unmatched seafloors and caves, both on land and underwater. It is also an ideal place for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. And if you like, you can schedule an outing to the nearby national parks.

For the little ones, it might be fun and interesting to visit the Mallorca Aquarium, which is home to more than 100 tanks with marine life from all corners of the Earth.
